What is Natural Farming?


Natural farming is a chemical-free farming system rooted in tradition and enriched with a modern understanding of ecology . It is often described as an agroecology-based diversified farming system that integrates crops, trees, and livestock.


Popularized by Japanese farmer and philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka and adapted in India by Subhash Palekar (as Zero Budget Natural Farming), it is a philosophy that works with nature rather than trying to control it .


Key Principles of Natural Farming:


  • No External Inputs: This is the most significant differentiator. Natural farming discourages the use of any purchased inputs—whether synthetic or organic. Farmers are encouraged to rely solely on resources available on their farm .
  • On-Farm Concoctions: Instead of compost or manure, natural farming uses specific fermented microbial formulations made from local, on-farm resources like cow dung and urine (from indigenous breeds), jaggery, and pulse flour. Key preparations include Beejamrit (for seed treatment), Jeevamrit (for soil enrichment), and Achhadana (mulching) .
  • Minimal Intervention: It emphasizes practices like no-tilling, no weeding, and maintaining soil cover (mulching) to create a natural microclimate. The concept of Whapasa involves balancing air and moisture in the soil, reducing the need for frequent irrigation .
  • Integration: It strongly emphasizes the integration of livestock (especially native cow breeds) and trees, managing biodiversity on the farm to naturally control pests and diseases .
  • No Formal Certification: Natural farming is currently practiced more as a philosophy or a set of principles. It does not have a standardized, government-regulated certification process like organic farming, relying instead on community self-governance and farmer networks .
